Happy Opening Day!!

Baseball is back! Needless to say, I am excited. :) I don’t really have much else to say about it…so here are some quotes about baseball! GO ASTROS.

“The other sports are just sports. Baseball is a love.” –Bryant Gumbel, 1981

“Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.” –George F. Will

“People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” — Rogers Hornsby

“You can’t sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You’ve got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That’s why baseball is the greatest game of them all.” — Earl Weaver

And my FAVORITE baseball quote of all time…

“I believe in the Church of Baseball. I tried all the major religions and most of the minor ones. I’ve worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, trees, mushrooms and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance…I’ve tried ‘em all, I really have, and the only church that truly feeds the soul, day in, day out, is the Church of Baseball. ” — Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon), Bull Durham, 1988

Competent vs Nice

Filed under: My Day — Jill @ 4:16 pm

Why do people get this confused?? This was brought up at lunch today, and I have been thinking about it ever since then. Why do people get performing well in your job confused with being nice?? For instance, if you are complaining about the job someone is doing, invariably someone will interrupt and say “Oh, so-and-so is so nice…” Like they are admonishing you for talking badly about them. But here is the thing….they may be a nice, sweet, caring person…but that does NOT mean they can be respected in their job. I don’t get it. When did this become such an issue?? I cannot stand that. Believing someone to be a nice person does not mean I have to respect the job that they do. The same deal with people who think you have to be friends with people you work with. Guess what….you DON’T. Yes, that would be nice…and yes, I am friends with many people I work with. But there are also people I work with that I respect the job they do, but wouldn’t want to really be at a happy hour with them. And that is my personal opinion. Me not liking them as a human being doesn’t mean they are not doing a good job and that I cannot work with them. Damn. Can you tell I am venting? This stuff just drives me nuts. People take everything so personally. We almost cannot even correct people when they mess up, because that isn’t “nice”….which just means they are going to be making the same mistakes over and over! And making everyone else’s jobs harder!! Whew. Okay, I am done for the day. :) Have a good weekend!

Positive Thinking…(for once!)

Filed under: My Day — Jill @ 1:41 pm

Ha. The last month has been a complete roller coaster. No need to go into my last four weeks in detail, but be assured they have been insane. This week (hopefully!) will be a complete week at work for me….for the first time in about a month! Whew. I am tired! It is hard to get back in the swing of things. At least I can see the top of my desk again. And I have decided to be more positive about the rest of this year. It IS going to be good! :)

Hope everyone is doing well! Maybe I will get back into things and start posting more. We shall see! :)
